Using the Shia Islamic calendar

ShiaCal helps you find Shia Islamic commemorations, celebrations and other religious dates. Each observance is shown with its Hijri date and a calculated Gregorian date, so you can plan ahead or learn about an event. The public calendar and reference pages are available without creating an account. Start with the calendar above, or use the year and month references below if you prefer a list you can read and share.

Find an event or browse a year

Use the previous and next month controls to move through the calendar, or Today to return to the current month. Select a marked date to see its observances. The event list links to individual event pages, where you can read descriptions and follow the listed sources. Celebrations, commemorations and other events have separate labels to help you tell them apart.

For a broader view, open the calendar for 2026. Its month links lead to Hijri month guides with event lists and frequently asked questions. You can also begin with Muharram events or read about Ashura and Imam al-Hussain (as). These reference pages work without the interactive calendar controls.

Understand dates and local adjustments

Islamic observances follow the Hijri lunar calendar. Their Gregorian dates change from year to year, and a Gregorian month can overlap two Hijri months. ShiaCal calculates conversions to help with planning. These are estimated dates: confirm the beginning of a lunar month and the date of an observance with your local community or religious authority before relying on it for religious practice.

If your community follows a different moon sighting, open Settings and adjust the Hijri date by up to five days in either direction. This changes the dates shown in the interactive calendar and event list, and your browser remembers the setting. The adjustment is personal to your calendar view; it does not rewrite the dates on the public year and month reference pages. Reset the setting to zero to return to the default calculated dates.

Add events to your calendar app

Choose Add to your calendar to subscribe using Google Calendar, Apple Calendar or Outlook, or download an ICS file to import into another calendar app. The subscription dialog starts with your current website adjustment as a suggestion, but its offset is independent. Check that value before subscribing: changing the website setting later does not change an existing subscription's feed URL.

The default ICS calendar feed uses no date offset. Separate feeds are available for adjustments from minus five to plus five days. Calendar apps control how often subscriptions refresh. Importing a downloaded file creates a snapshot; subscribing to a feed lets your app fetch updates. To change a subscription's adjustment, select the matching feed in the dialog and manage the old subscription in your calendar app.

Check sources and suggest corrections

Event pages include source references where available so you can check the background of an observance. The sources and acknowledgements page describes the resources used by the project, and the About page explains its purpose. ShiaCal is a calendar reference; questions about religious rulings should be directed to your religious authority.

If you notice a missing event, an incorrect description or a date that needs checking, contact the ShiaCal team with the event name, page link and supporting reference. For a date question, include the year and any adjustment you selected so the team can understand the calendar view you were using. You can share event links with family or your community without asking them to create an account.
